It’s Good Friday, 29 March 2024, and although we have previously published on the website ‘Sunbeam’ by our poet Colin Hopkirk I think it is just the right poem for us to read again today. Day 482 of the daily new poems.
Sunbeam
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam
and I think of a Sunbeam Alpine
that late 1950s ‘two seater sports’
built haphazardly in Coventry
beloved of middle aged tinkerers
men who believe in imperial spanners
arranged in precise ascending order
practical men with immaculate sheds
who could knock up a cross in half a day
simple lap joints with a few hefty dowels
hoist it in place with block and tackle
and have it back down by teatime
