Modulating his way into our new theme of The Music, our poet Colin Hopkirk hears Highway 51 Bob serenading the leavers, as the pub slowly empties. Day 615 of the daily poems.
Hushed tones
hushed tones before the footy
a passing car hoots
the pub slowly emptying
as moody Bob, angsty Bob
Highway 51 Bob
serenades the leavers
and the lonely barman
collecting empties
who likes the anger in the song
and the slackness
how loose it is
how it only just holds
but isn’t fussed about the harmonica
wouldn’t miss it at all
thinks, artistically, it’s all a bit you know
a bit unnecessary
an embellishment too far
