Day 636 – Burbage Brook (Monach)

On Day 636 of the daily poems our poet Jane Monach hears the gentle music of the Burbage Brook as it tumbles on its way to join the River Derwent.

Burbage Brook

I begin with gentle accents
minims and crotchets
spread silkcurls on slab
opalescent slide shows

a rush of sussurations
whipped to quavers
to urgency over boulders

nestled into a still pool
with broods of bubbles
breves and semibreves

slowly on to a rest
my flurries absorbed
to suck earthen banks

channelled to smooth
before rocks rip me into
a turbulence of semiquavers

towards untamed
tumble, fizz, froth
and swirl, to stream
a never-ending tune
