Day 561 – Romance in my back garden (Ford)

Day 561 of the daily poems; our theme is still Summer and/or Courtship.  Our poet today, Brian Ford, follows a romance in the garden …

Romance in my back garden

I first saw the courting couple
in my back garden on Boxing Day.
I offered them dried mealworms;
robins are very fond of those.

After a few weeks they would appear
whenever I opened the back door,
bouncing along on legs as thin as cocktail sticks,
heads cocked on one side,
shining, coal black eyes watching me expectantly.
In early summer I saw the result of their courtship.

When they came looking for food
they brought the family with them;
four fat, big beaked speckled breasted offspring.
I fed them too,
feeling like a proud grandfather.
