Day 722 of the Daily Poems, 25 November 2024 – would have been Paul Desmond’s 100th birthday. Such a superb saxophonist. Well, Paul may have gone, but our poet Julia Usher bends the ear to those still here …
November
Beyond Guy Fawkes and Hallowe’en,
The winter lurches nearer…..
No sign of snow
Or icy frozen breath
Marks frozen window panes as yet……
The smaller birds still peep and chirp on feeders;
The larger, stronger flyers leave for foreign climes……….
Not even closed November
removes the sound of gulls,
of rattling magpies,
and robins’ arias……
As I bend the ear to those still here……….
