Our poet Jenna Plewes encounters a five-barred gate, solid oak – the perfect portal, made to last a lifetime. And it is Day 732 of the Daily Poems.
Between the bars
It is the way in – or the way out
a five-barred gate, solid oak
weathered pigeon-grey
made to last a lifetime
the start and end of her walks
until today. The hanging post
has rotted at the base, pulled
the gate down. It lies askew
unlatched. She picks her way
between the bars.
She will sit him down and talk?
Maybe she’ll leave a note instead?
